The overarching goals of this class are to introduce you to the outlines of psychology as a scientific discipline and foster critical thinking about the facts and theories. Psychology is abroad field, and psychological topics are studied from several different perspectives. We wil ltouch on many of the major questions, theories, and research findings of psychology. Of course, since we have only 6 weeks to cover the entire field of psychology, our consideration of most topics must be rather selective and brief. However, after this course, you should be familiar with the basics and be prepared for further study in more advanced psychology courses. I also hope that this course will increase your curiosity and your interest in the field of psychology. In order to make this a stimulating course, you need to contribute your time, effort, attention, and genuine curiosity. I want your active involvement.

This course offers a general and practical introduction to sociology. It is designed for students at KU with no previous course in sociology and wishing to learn something about this field: What is sociology? How does it differ from other social sciences? How can we apply sociological knowledge to our work and lives in a global world? What career opportunities are opened to sociologists, and how can sociological knowledge help your professional and private success? With these goals in mind, the course covers 1) definitions and subdivisions of sociology; the differences between sociology and other social sciences; 2) the main functions and institutions of societies; 3) main theories in sociology: why do people do what they do, and why are societies organized the way they are? 4) key methods of sociological analysis.

This course examines the Global and Cross-Cultural intersection of gender, class, and nation in contemporary Korean society through the lens of Korean films. The turbulent recent history of South Korea has produced a society that is engaged with a variety of local and global social forces in complex and contradictory ways. The sweeping social changes in South Korea have redefined and re-examined the country, and its relation to such basic ideas as gender, class, tradition, and the nation. Korean films provide a gateway into these issues and how Koreans have been thinking about them within the global cross-cultural context. Students will be exposed to a variety of films that deal with various issues pertaining to tradition, national division and civil war, gender, class, and national identity. All films will have English subtitles.

This course provides the opportunity to become acquainted with Korean culture and society, reflected in its language, since the linguistic system of Korean and its daily uses are inseparably interwoven with the ever-evolving culture and society of the Korean people. It aims at a general understanding of Korean language and people, with emphasis on the culture and society. Attempts will be made to highlight the uniqueness of Korean cultural tradition in the broad context of East Asian civilization (Japanese and Chinese), as well as Western influence, especially of English. Its focal point is to cover invention and use of the Korean alphabet, standard language (South Korean) and cultured language (North Korean), Korean in contact with Chinese, Korean in contact with Japanese, sound symbolism, proverbs, terms of calendar, kinship terms, slang, honorifics, phatic expression, gender differences, Korean advertisements, linguistic structure and dialectal variation. Reading materials and lectures are in English.

Linear algebra is a fundamental area of mathematics that studies systems of linear equations and the properties of matrices. It has become an indispensable tool in many branches of science, from pure mathematics to engineering and economics. This course introduces students to the basic concepts and theorems of linear algebra, including: • Systems of linear equations and their solutions • Determinants • Vector spaces • Eigenvalues and eigenvectors • Diagonalization • Orthogonality and least squares Students will develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills in applying these concepts to real-world problems.
