    COURSE CODE

    AERO4600

This course builds upon the flight dynamics modelling in 'AERO3000 Flight Dynamics' and considers dynamics, stability, response and hardware integration aspects of flight control system development. It treats the representation of aircraft response to deterministic control inputs in the frequency domain. Following this, the response of an aircraft to stochastic inputs (wind gusts) is investigated after developing the necessary probabilistic tools to represent wind gusts. A detailed revision of classical control theory and design methods is given in the context of control design for full multi-modal longitudinal and lateral-directional cross-coupled flight control problems. The course culminates with a full six-degree-of-freedom aircraft flight control design exercise, including implementation and testing in a flight simulation framework. Students will gain experience from group activities involving flight control loop analysis, design, implementation and testing in a flight simulation environment.

In an age of online information overload, how can we think for ourselves about what is worth knowing or even true? Disciplines in the Bachelor of Arts emerged to create knowledge by seeking to understand, or think critically about, people’s choices and experiences in the past and present, with an eye to the future.  This means that we have useful shared principles for evaluating the quality of information. These humanities principles can be learned by focusing on evidence and what it means to be evidence-based and logical in writing and speaking. This course builds on HASS1000 by developing  skills to discern when knowledge claims can be accepted as true, ethical and inclusive. Students completing this course will gain a toolkit for asking critical questions, and designing projects to provide quality answers.

your abode

Hop students will call the South or West Residences home—modern, welcoming apartments that combine independence with social connection. You'll have your own private bedroom for downtime, while shared kitchens, living spaces, and bathrooms make it easy to bond with fellow students from around the globe.

Perfectly located on campus, these residences are just a short walk from classes, dining spots, and recreational facilities, plus a short bus ride to Newcastle’s incredible beaches. Whether you’re whipping up dinner with new mates, relaxing after a surf, or heading out to explore the town, the Residences are the perfect base for your Newy adventure.

local vibes

From the gritty resilience of its steel town past to the laid-back vibes of Merewether Beach, Newcastle’s character is as multifaceted as its surroundings. Stroll along Darby Street, where indie cafes, quirky boutiques, and art galleries create a hub of creativity. Head into the city’s music venues for a live show or explore its revitalized industrial spaces, now buzzing with breweries and artisan markets.

Just beyond the city, the Hunter Valley offers a lush escape into Australia’s wine country. Wander through rolling vineyards, savor world-class wines, and enjoy farm-to-table dining surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Newcastle is where connection, adventure, and the Aussie way of life come together.

Students start their journey with a Welcome to Country led by Indigenous elder Delta Kay, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and spiritual significance of the Bundjalung land they will call home.

Beyond structured sessions, students kayak with dolphins, practice morning yoga, and stay at Crystalbrook Byron, a sustainability-driven hotel nestled in subtropical rainforest. The result? A mindset shift that prioritizes well-being, cultural awareness, and community from day one—helping students start their semester with a strong foundation.

Through interactive sessions with experts like Tim Jack Adams (wellness strategist) and Dr. Jodie Bradman (clinical psychologist), students explore resilience, stress management, and personal well-being strategies to navigate the challenges of studying abroad.

Renowned wellness chef Samantha Gowing leads a hands-on workshop on food as medicine, teaching students how to fuel their bodies on a budget while embracing Australia’s vibrant food culture.

Walter

Michigan State University

"Growing up, I was a huge fan of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. He inspired me a lot to get into my major and study wildlife. Australia is about as wild as it gets. Right now, I am living the best life."

Gabby

University of Florida

“Studying abroad with Hop has truly been the best decision I have ever made. In a short amount of time, I have explored the lively rainforests and the shimmering Great Barrier Reef. I've climbed mountains, sat at the edge of waterfalls, and even surfed the waves of the Gold Coast. I've met so many new friends from different backgrounds who unite on the same goal of discovering and learning, and I couldn’t have done that without Hop.”
