To develop the linguistic proficiency of the learner to a level that enables to understand complex texts and to present detailed presentations and positions, and to prepare for the acquisition of linguistic competences at level C1.1 as set out in the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The knowledge and skills in grammar and written expression consist of the following: 1. The varieties of Finnish: dialects, differences between everyday and standard language, slangs. 2. The development of standard Finnish compared with standard Estonian. 3. Finnish vocabulary. 4. Short essays on the subjects mentioned in items 1 - 3. The student will practise and learn fluent expression in a clear and well structured text showing a necessary thoroughness in expressing an opinion. Reading and listening and comprehension: Reading and interpretation of original Finnish essays and scientific texts. Watching and listening to original video recordings in Finnish (news, films, ec.) by which means the understanding of spoken forms of Finnish, including everyday language, dialects and slangs is exercised Skills in spoken language: discussions on up-to-date subjects concerning the Finnish language, Finnish culture and society. The students will choose their subjects independently, and present them in the form of reports. A group discussion will follow.

The course provides an overview of the most important events and stages in the development of Finnish history. The main topics are: Finland's prehistory, the Christianization of Finland, the Reformation, Agricola and the emergence of the written language, the Great Northern War and its impact on Finland, Elias Lönrot and the Kalevala, Finland as part of Russia, the birth of national consciousness and national romanticism, the Great Famine, the Land Days, Independence and the Civil War, the Finnish wars (1939-45), Väinö Linna's The Unknown Soldier and Under the Northern Star, the Cold War era, literary diversification, modern Finland and Finnish society, the history of Finnish music and the modern era. The course will support language acquisition at B2 level and the development of vocabulary on history and culture as the course is in Finnish.

Introduction to economic policy. Why does one need economic policies? History of economic policy. Theoretical approaches and historical debates to economic policy. International trade regimes. Where does money and power go and who controls and shapes the markets and policies? Do states need to intervene in economics or not? Interdependence of politics and economics. What is wealth and how is it created (and can it be measured)? What is the purpose of world economy? Who rules in the world economy? Getting accounted with basic terms and methodologies.
